I first saw copy of this poster in the hospital at Versailles in Guyana as a pre-teen. It had a deep impression on me at that time and I was always fascinated by its contents. In veterinary school, Sushruta was documented as one of the ancient physicians who discovered a parasite. I was always fascinated by the history of medicine and the contributions of India to modern medicine. In the early 1980's following a pilgrimage to Mount Abu, I was undergoing a visiting studentship at the Cardiovascular Research Center of University of California, SanFrancisco Medical Center. I took the chance, in my spare time to examine historical documents in the library of UC SFMC library. I was preparing a slide documentary titled: God, Man and Medicine In The Cycle. There was the picture again of Sushruta in a book titled: Great Moments In Medicine. In the fall of 1981, an article on the history of cardiovascular surgery was published by in Tuskegee Veterinarian. The picture of Sushruta was a great source of inspiration for me, though I became a zoo veterinatian and toxicologist. In my study and library at home I will have this poster of one of the world's greatest surgeons.

Artist's Description

Sushruta, one of the earliest surgeons of the recorded history (600 B.C.) is believed to be the first individual to describe plastic surgery. Sushruta who lived nearly 150 years before Hippocrates vividly described the basic principles of plastic surgery in his famous ancient treatise 'Sushruta Samhita'
1,2 in 600 B.C. 'Sushruta Samhita'(Sushruta's compendium) which is one of the oldest treatise dealing with surgery in the world indicates that he was probably the first surgeon to perform plastic surgical operations. This shows a historical window into various contributions of Sushruta to plastic surgery and allied fields which were described in 'Sushruta Samhita' more than 2500 millennia ago. Allen Oldfather Whipple, another surgeon and the 19th century’s major innovator in pancreatic surgery, said, “All in all, Sushruta must be considered the greatest surgeon of the pre-medieval period.”( This painting shown here is a replicated work done by PV Mathew)

About George Jacob

I love fine art and my medium of choice is watercolor. I am mostly a self taught artist but have take classes from masters around the world. I adopt a semi realistic style in my paintings and would like to convey a sense of engagement to my viewers. I am a story teller. Therefore most of my themes are based on rural landscapes, people in action, and architecture. Presently living in Virginia with my family, I am a member of both Virginia watercolor society and American water color society. My paintings are in the collection of people in USA, middle east and India. Some of my works are featured in the watercoloraddictsgallery.com
